An Dinnéar: The Dinner
Six o'clock, the table set, and one plate of carrots nobody wants.
Tá ocras orm.
I am hungry.
Tagann mo Dhaid abhaile ar a sé.
My Dad comes home at six.
Déanann sé an dinnéar.
He makes the dinner.
Tá prátaí agus bagún againn.
We have potatoes and bacon.
Tá cabáiste ann freisin.
There is cabbage too.
Ní maith liom na cairéid.
I don't like the carrots.
Ach itheann mé iad.
But I eat them.
Suímid ag an mbord le chéile.
We sit at the table together.
Labhraímid faoin lá.
We talk about the day.
Nigh mé na soithí ina dhiaidh sin.
I washed the dishes after that.
Bhí an dinnéar go hálainn.
The dinner was lovely.
A note on this one
Bacon and cabbage, bagún agus cabáiste, is the plainest dinner in the country and the one most often named when people are asked what Irish food is. The potatoes were never in question.
