Old Photographs of Ireland

Old photographs of Ireland sent in by the people who have them: streets, shopfronts, farms, fair days and family portraits, with the place and the year where they are known.

Old photographs of Ireland, sent in by the people who have them. A street before the cars, a shopfront with the name over the door in Irish, a fair day, a half-door, a family stood out in their good clothes. If you have one in a drawer, it belongs here.

Sackville Street and O’Connell Bridge, Dublin
Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street), Dublin · about 1900

Looking up Sackville Street from O’Connell Bridge. Nelson’s Pillar still stands in the middle of the street, where it would remain until 1966, and the O’Connell Monument is in the foreground. Horse carts share the road with the trams, and Hopkins and Hopkins the jewellers keeps the corner by the bridge. The street was renamed O’Connell Street in 1924. A photochrom print, where the colour was added in the printing from a black and white negative.
