Lá Breithe Shona: Happy Birthday

Eight candles, one cake, and a bicycle that was not expected.

Inniu mo lá breithe.
Today is my birthday.

Tá mé ocht mbliana d'aois.
I am eight years old.

Dúisím go luath ar maidin.
I wake early in the morning.

Tagann mo chairde go dtí an teach.
My friends come to the house.

Tá císte mór ar an mbord.
There is a big cake on the table.

Tá ocht gcoinneal air.
There are eight candles on it.

Séidim amach iad.
I blow them out.

Canann gach duine an t-amhrán.
Everybody sings the song.

Lá breithe shona duit, a deir siad.
Happy birthday to you, they say.

Faighim rothar nua ó mo Mham.
I get a new bicycle from my Mam.

Tá áthas orm.
I am happy.

Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.
Thank you all.

A note on this one

Lá breithe shona duit is happy birthday to one person; to a room of people it is daoibh. The song is sung to the same tune as the English one, which arrived with the twentieth century.
