Two neighbours meet on the street. There is only ever one topic.

1. Lá breá, buíochas le Dia! (A fine day, thank God!)
Tá sé go hálainn. (It's lovely.)

2. Ach tá báisteach ag teacht. (But there's rain coming.)
Meas tú? (Do you reckon?)

3. Tá a fhios agam. Tá sé i mo ghlúin. (I know it. It's in my knee.)

4. Bhí an ceart agat. (You were right.)
Bíonn i gcónaí. (I always am.)

Phrases worth stealing

• Lá breá, buíochas le Dia. — A fine day, thank God. The standard opening. You will hear it on every street in Ireland.
• Meas tú? — Do you reckon? Two words, endlessly useful.
• Bhí an ceart agat. — You were right. Literally “the right was at you” — Irish gives you things rather than making you them.
• Bíonn i gcónaí. — I always am. Uses bíonn, the habitual — “I do be”, over and over.
