Maidin sa Ghaeltacht — A Morning in the Gaeltacht

An early start by the sea, and a cup of tea with your mother.

Tá mé i mo shuí go luath.
I am up early.

Tá an ghrian ag éirí os cionn na farraige.
The sun is rising over the sea.

Tá an teach ciúin.
The house is quiet.

Déanaim cupán tae.
I make a cup of tea.

Osclaím an doras.
I open the door.

Tá an aimsir go breá inniu.
The weather is fine today.

Feicim bád beag amuigh ar an uisce.
I see a small boat out on the water.

Tagann mo mháthair isteach.
My mother comes in.

“Maidin mhaith,” a deir sí.
“Good morning,” she says.

“Maidin mhaith, a Mham,” a deirim.
“Good morning, Mam,” I say.

Suímid síos le chéile.
We sit down together.

Is maith liom na maidineacha seo.
I like these mornings.

A note on this one

Notice “tá mé i mo shuí” — literally “I am in my sitting”. Irish often describes a state as something you are *in*, rather than something you *are*.
