An Cat Dubh — The Black Cat
A large, lazy cat and his very reasonable daily routine.
Tá cat dubh againn.
We have a black cat.
Pangur is ainm dó.
Pangur is his name.
Tá sé an-mhór agus an-leisciúil.
He is very big and very lazy.
Codlaíonn sé ar an gcathaoir gach lá.
He sleeps on the chair every day.
Ní maith leis an bháisteach.
He doesn’t like the rain.
San oíche, téann sé amach.
At night, he goes out.
Bíonn sé ag rith timpeall an ghairdín.
He runs around the garden.
Ar maidin, tagann sé abhaile agus bíonn ocras air.
In the morning, he comes home and he is hungry.
Tugaim bia dó.
I give him food.
Ansin, téann sé a chodladh arís.
Then he goes to sleep again.
Is beatha mhaith í, is dócha.
It’s a good life, I suppose.
A note on this one
Pangur is a nod to *Pangur Bán* — a poem an Irish monk scribbled in the margin of his manuscript around the 9th century, comparing his hunt for words to his cat’s hunt for mice. It may be the most-loved cat poem in Europe.
