Anghaile, in English Annaly, said ANG-ul-eh. A kingdom.

County Longford. A small midland kingdom that is more or less exactly one modern county.

The name

the territory of the Ó Fearghail

Where

County Longford.

In today's counties: Longford (An Longfort).

When it mattered

Under the Ó Fearghail from the twelfth century until the plantation of Longford in the 1620s.

Annaly is one of the neatest fits between an old kingdom and a modern county. The Ó Fearghail, the O'Farrells, held this country from the twelfth century, and when Longford was shired in 1571 the new county was drawn around what they held.

The name Longford itself is an Ó Fearghail word: Longphort Uí Fhearghail, the fortress of O'Farrell, which was their stronghold and is now the county town.

What is left of the name

The baronies of Longford and Ardagh, and the name Annaly on schools and clubs across the county.
