The Banshee (Bean Sídhe)

A female spirit whose wailing warns of the death of a family member.

The Banshee (from "Bean Sídhe", meaning "Woman of the Fairy Mound") is a solitary female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member. She is not evil, but her mournful cry, known as "keening" (caoineadh), is a warning to the family to prepare for a loss.

She is often described in one of three forms: a young woman with long, pale hair; a stately matron; or an ugly old crone with frightening red eyes. She is traditionally said to follow only the old Irish families (the O's and the Macs).

Legend says she can be seen combing her long hair with a silver comb. Finding such a comb on the ground is considered bad luck, as taking it might summon her.
