Sean-nós Singing (Amhránaíocht ar an Sean-nós)

A highly ornamented style of unaccompanied traditional Irish singing.

Sean-nós ("old style") singing is the most traditional form of Irish singing. It is performed solo, without any musical accompaniment, and almost always in the Irish language.

The focus of sean-nós is entirely on the expression of the lyrics. The singer tells a story—often of lost love, emigration, or local tragedy—weaving complex melodic ornamentation around the core notes to emphasize certain words or emotions. No two performances are ever exactly the same, as the singer is free to vary the rhythm and melody to suit the mood.

The audience plays a key role, often encouraging the singer with interjections or by holding the singer's hand (a tradition known as "wind-winding"), creating an intimate and powerful connection.
