Fiddle (An Veidhlín)

The violin played in a specific traditional Irish style.

In Ireland, the violin is almost universally known as the "fiddle." Physically, it is the exact same instrument as the classical violin; the difference lies entirely in the style of playing.

Irish fiddle playing focuses on melody and rhythm rather than harmony. It is characterized by rapid, intricate bowing patterns and rich ornamentation. Different regions of Ireland have distinct styles: the Donegal style is fast and aggressive, influenced by Scottish piping; the Clare style is slower and more lyrical; and the Sliabh Luachra style (Cork/Kerry) is known for its rhythmic polkas and slides.

The fiddle is one of the pillars of Irish music, capable of leading a session or weaving through the melody with other instruments.
