Focal an Lae: Sióg

Friday, 16 October 2026

Sióg (SHEE-ohg) is the Irish for a fairy.

From sí, the fairy mound. The people of the sí were rarely called fairies to their face in Irish: they were na daoine maithe, the good people, on the principle that it is safer to be polite.
