Green, white and orange in three equal vertical stripes, with the green nearest the flagpole. It is twice as long as it is high.
The green stands for the Gaelic, nationalist tradition and the orange for the followers of William of Orange. Thomas Francis Meagher, who first flew it, said the white in the centre signified "a lasting truce between the Orange and the Green".
Meagher first flew it in public in Waterford on 7 March 1848. The Constitution of 1937 names it the national flag.

A red cross on gold, taken from the arms of the de Burgh Earls of Ulster, with the Red Hand of the O'Neills on a white shield at its centre.
Legend says two chieftains raced by boat to claim the land, the first hand to touch the shore to win it. One of them cut off his own hand and threw it ahead of him.
This is the flag of the nine-county province, the one flown at GAA matches. It is not the "Ulster Banner", the former flag of the Northern Ireland government.
