The Munster
Sound System.

Irish spelling is regular — the letters honestly tell you the sound. The whole language turns on one switch: every consonant is broad or slender. Munster keeps the same switch but adds its own music: a roaming stress and vowels that stretch before ll · nn · m. Learn those, plus the four short rules, and the southern dialect opens up.

Broad — dark, heavy Slender — soft, y-tinged Fada — long vowel Munster accent — the stressed beat
The Switch · which vowel touches the consonant?
Broad / Leathan
a o u

Consonant goes dark & heavy — pulled to the back of the mouth. The "default" sound.

Slender / Caol
e i

Consonant goes soft, with a hidden y-glide — tongue pushed to the front.

1 The Fada a stroke = long + a different word
á
aw
tá · law
é
ay
mé · say
í
ee
tí · see
ó
oh
bó · go
ú
oo
tú · moon
Memory hookChant them in order: "aw — ay — ee — oh — oo." Never skip the stroke: sean = old, but Seán = John.
Munster marker · aoIn Munster the pair ao usually sounds like "ay" (an é-colour), where the north says "ee": saol → "sayl", aon → "ayn". That's why the dialect calls the language Gaolainn → "GAY-lin", not Gaeilge.
2 The Roaming Accent Munster the beat can leave syllable 1

Most Irish hammers the first syllable. Munster lets the stress move — a heavier syllable later in the word grabs the beat. Two things pull it:

cailín
kal-EEN
long vowel in syll 2 → girl
ciseán
ki-SHAWN
long vowel pulls the beat → basket
bacach
ba-KOKH
short syll 2 in -ach → lame
amadán
a-ma-DAWN
long vowel in syll 3 → fool
Memory hookStress sits on the first syllable unless a later one is heavier: a long vowel (fada / ao / eo) in syllable 2 or 3 wins, and a plain -ach in syllable 2 wins too. This roaming beat is the single biggest "tell" of a Munster speaker.
3 Stretch before ll · nn · m · rr Munster a short vowel grows long or glides

Before a "tense" sonorant (ll, nn, m, rr, ng) the vowel won't stay short. Broad a/o diphthong into "ow"; i simply lengthens to "ee".

am
owm
am → time
poll
powl
poll → hole
im
eem
im → butter
Memory hookMore of the same: crann → "crown", ceann → "kyown", cill → "keel", gall → "gowl". The spelling stays short — your ear lengthens it. (The north keeps these crisp and short.)
4 The Slender s · d · t next to e or i, they soften
s
sh
→ shee
d
dy
Dia → DYEE-a
t
ty
→ tyee
Memory hook · the Munster differenceSlender s"sh" everywhere. But where Connacht & Ulster push slender d and t all the way to j and ch, Munster stops at the doorstep: a clean, dental "dy" and "ty" — like English dew and tune. So is "tyee", not "chee".
5 Add an "h" → Lenition softens or silences the letter
fh
completely silent — it vanishes · fhios → "iss"
sh · th
both become a plain "h" · thú → "hoo", shin → "hin"
bh · mh
a true "v" when slender; at a word-start, Munster also leans "v" broad · mhín → "veen", bhád → "vawd"
bh · mh
mid-word, broad bh/mh melts into the vowel · leabhar → "l'our", samhradh → "sow-ruh"
ph
becomes "f" · pháiste → "FAWSH-tya"
ch
throaty "kh" — as in loch · chonaic → "khun-ik"
dh · gh
"y" when slender; soft gargle or silent when broad · often just lengthens the vowel
Memory hookFH dies. SH/TH turn to breath ("h"). BH/MH are the v/w twins — Munster favours v. PH=f, CH=loch.
Munster verb endingWatch the conditional -adh: in Munster it's pronounced "-ach" (loch sound), not "-oo". bheadh sé → "vyach shay", cheannódh → "khan-OACH".
6 Eclipsis a new letter barges in front

dt
d
Memory hookSay the first letter, mute the second. The newcomer "eclipses" the original — i mBaile → "im WAL-ya", i gContae → "ig un-TAY". When the eclipsed letter is slender d or t, keep Munster's crisp dy / ty: i dteach → "i dyach".

Now read these cold.

You already have every rule you need — including the three Munster tells. Build each word from the pieces.
